My Book Recommendations

We are living in a strange, scary and overwhelming time. This can feel frustrating and make it hard to see or focus on the good things in life. And you know what, it’s completely valid to feel this way, you’re only human. There is so much unknown with our daily life, the connections we have with those we hold dearest to us and even the status of work and school can feel eerie. But it’s also important to remind ourselves that we are alive… life is beautiful and that we’re all in this together. On that note, I encourage you to practice social distancing to ensure the safety of those at higher risk and to limit the spread. Each of us has the responsibility to do so.

To help with social distancing, I thought I’d share some of my favorite books that are also available in audio-book. Hopefully this list of books can help you to rejuvenate, tune in to yourself or take a step back from reality. Sending love and light, enjoy.

“In fact I need you to know it was all true. The friendly guy who helps you move and assists senior citizens in the pool is the same guy who assaulted me. One person can be capable of both. Society often fails to wrap its head around the fact that these truths often coexist, they are not mutually exclusive. Bad qualities can hide inside a good person. That's the terrifying part.” ― Chanel Miller, Know My Name: A Memoir

Perhaps one of my favorite books ever, Know My Name by Chanel Miller is a must read. In case you didn’t know, Chanel Miller, previously known as Emily Doe when her victim impact statement was released, Chanel reclaims her name and identity, proving she is more than just a victim. One of the most difficult books I’ve ever read, including the sensitive content but also the injustice of everything Chanel writes regarding her experience. If you give this one a chance, I recommend reading in solitude with a box of tissues by your side.

“I learned a very important thing that day: my mom would never try to change for a man, and I wouldn’t, either.” Christina Lauren, Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating

I’ve read this twice. It’s a fun and light read if you’re looking for a rom-com book, especially when it’s written by my favorite duo Christina Lauren. The plot of this story basically revolves around the idea and actions of Josh and Hazel becoming best friends after some "awkward" college moments and finding out that Hazel's best friend, Emily, is Josh's sister. As friends, Josh and Hazel go through a series of setting each other up on blind dates and the story takes off from there. And that’s all I’ll say because I don’t want to give any spoilers. *wink, wink* I laughed so much, seriously, give this book a try.

“Loneliness is a sign you are in desperate need of yourself.” ― Rupi Kaur, Milk and Honey

A collection of poems written by Rupi Kaur, this book is organized through words that transcend loss, love, heartbreak, feminism, abuse and empowerment. If you’re looking for a dose of inspiration or in need of healing, I recommend this quick read. <3

“I also understood why my mom wasn’t into processing her feelings, and how she was taught to just get over tragedy. To survive, she had to believe things like depression and allergies were a choice.” ― Ali Wong, Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets, & Advice for Living Your Best Life

I am a HUGE fan of Ali Wong and thankfully, received this book from an awesome friend as a gift. Even if you’re unfamiliar with comedian Ali Wong and her work, I still encourage you to give this book a try! Especially if you identify as Asian American. In this book Wong shares her honest and raw experiences as a mother, dating, sex and Asian culture. I cannot tell you how many times I laughed out loud and felt (relatable) second-hand embarrassment from Wong’s wisdom and retelling of her lived experiences. FYI, if you read this, prepare for some heartfelt laughs.

This is only a small list but keep a lookout for my next book recommendations. Let me know what your favorite books are. Remember to care for yourself and loved one’s at this time. Sending healing vibes.

Thanks for reading.
