Guess what? Winter is over, the sun is out and spring is here! Well… Minnesota is going through some stuff right now. There’s been rain, sun and snow all within a week so the Minnesota weather has been a mess. Despite the weather confusion, spring is a wonderful time to hold yourself accountable to the new year’s resolutions you made a few months back. That also means taking time to reflect on what you should continue to sustain with your energy and what you should let go of. Begin making changes for what serves you. Such as doing a spring detox (and I don't mean a juice press although that does sound amazing) and letting go of the things no longer serving you in your home or life. Here is a short list of things I've practiced letting go in recent years.
Your Space.
By this, I am referring to the physical space of your home. One of the most essential aspects to a positive outlook is how you structure your physical, living space. It is a reflection of who you are and should be something that makes you feel comfortable and at peace. Ask yourself, is your room, bathroom or living room how you currently want it? Do these spaces make you feel at peace when coming home from a long day? If not, this probably means you need an intervention. Perhaps rearranging your furniture to provide space will help to decluster; buy green plants, this may brighten your room; and are there particular items you no longer use but are just taking up space? It might be time to toss it.
Morning Habits.
What do you do in the morning right after you wake up from bed? Is it scrolling through Instagram, pressing snooze on your alarm or something else? Is what you’re doing motivate you to start your day in the best way? I admit I scroll through social media A LOT and press snooze all the time when Monday morning creeps back. However, I realized by constantly doing this it became a habit that took up most of my morning. And an hour later I rush to work feeling drowsy or unprepared and questioning if I turned off the lights, did I leave my iron on, etcetera. If your current morning habits aren’t serving you to begin the day as your best self, I recommend switching your routine. Tips that helped me restructure my morning is a 5-10 minute meditation, stretching my arms and limbs or blasting my favorite podcast. Here’s a list of some of my favorite Podcasts.
Toxic Relationships.
We all have someone in our life whom emits negative energy. They can take a toll on your mental health, drain your energy or perhaps, do not encourage you to be your best self. Although I strongly believe having connections with people increases personal development, unfortunately, some connections do not have our best interests in mind. This can impact your overall wellbeing and happiness. Is there someone in your life who currently drains your energy or you leave feeling heavy after hanging out? Perhaps it is time to reflect and decide if it is a relationship best letting go of. Your happiness and mental health are important too.
Your Closet.
Okay, my hands are up, guilty as charged. I admit, I do not wear everything in my closet. That includes shoes, shirts, pants, and dresses, etc. Furthermore, I definitely own and still wear some pieces that have surpassed their lifetime. I always tell myself an occasion will arise so I can finally wear that black dress I bought four years ago. Or lie that my 6 year old, ripped jeans are still salvageable. When that happens, cut that train of thought right away. Instead, I reverse my question, such as “Will I really wear that dress from four years ago? My style has completely changed” or “Are these jeans really presentable in public? Or am I holding onto an item simply because I have owned it for so long?” Weigh the pros and cons of items in your closet. Have you worn it more than 3 times in the last month? If not, it may be time to give it away. Note*** Consider donating your clothes to a local thrift store or a women’s shelter such as Breaking Free (a nonprofit for survivors of human trafficking and prostitution), Goodwill, Sarah’s Oasis (a home dedicated to empowering sexual assault survivors in leaving their best life or Dress for Success (a nationwide nonprofit empowering women to achieve economic independence). Call or email these places first to check if they are still accepting items. Oftentimes they run out of storage space but can still refer you to other places in need of clothing.
What else are you detoxing to improve your life in spring? Would love to read about it.
